Paint for tiles: 6 things to know to make the right choices!

Paint for tiles: 6 things to know to make the right choices!

1. Tile paint is a special paint

No, we do not use the pot pots in the room to repaint the kitchen tiles… At least not in most cases. Tile paint is a specific paint designed to resist impact or soles, for intensive and daily use. Applying standard paint directly to the tile may work, but the result will rarely be perfect, let alone durable.

There are, however, underlay for tiles on which a standard paint can be applied… but it is better to use it on a tile relatively to the shelter. In a passageway or on regularly washed tiles, such as in a bathroom, a specially adapted tile paint is essential. It is more expensive, but less than a new tile and more profitable than a paint that is damaged three months later!

2. The painting on tiles leaves the joints visible

Painting on tiles is… painting, well done. It is therefore a simple layer of color, not a coating. Result, once the tiling repainted, the joints and other reliefs remain visible. For those who would like to see them disappear, you will have to choose a coating for tiles rather than a paint, intended to cover the joints. Another option is waxed concrete, the application of which in a thick layer makes it possible to erase the reliefs.

3. Not all tile paints are created equal

We don't necessarily talk about quality, each tile paint having its usefulness. On clear tiles, a paint for basic tiles is usually sufficient. On dark tiles, on the other hand, it is better to provide a very opaque paint that can hide the original shade without having to apply ten coats. As for a damaged tile, with hollowed or raised joints, it will need a more covering tile paint, unless there is a suitable underlay.

4. Painting on tiles is suitable for all tiles

Porcelain, earthenware or ceramic, all types of tiles can be simply renovated with tile paint. Provided you choose the right one! The question is not so much to find the best paint as to opt for the best suited to the type of tile to be covered. If in doubt, take a photo or recover a broken piece before asking specialists in store to identify the type of tiles. We take this opportunity to clarify whether the renovation concerns wall or floor tiles, the second requiring a particularly resistant paint to withstand the impact over time.

5. The tile paint changes depending on the location

There are wall tile paints, floor tile paints, paints for bathroom tiles… And there is no question of ignoring the criterion! On the floor, the paint must be particularly resistant and easily washable. In a bathroom, it must resist humidity, heat and remain washable again. As for repainting a work surface with tile paint, be careful: the paint must be safe when in contact with food. Again, therefore, we read the labels carefully.

6. Painting on tiles is getting ready

Ask the pros, they will always tell you the same thing: the secret of a successful painting lies in part in the preparation of the support. Even more so with paint on tiles, generally subjected to intensive use, on the floor as on the walls. For choose the right paint, we take the preparation instructions into account and follow them to the letter: in the vast majority of cases, the union minimum is to degrease the tiles beforehand. With certain paints for tiles, the application of an undercoat is essential.
