Clematis (clematis) is a plant belonging to the family of buttercups. She is also given the nickname "" Queen of Lianas "". There are nearly 300 varieties, they are climbing, semi-woody plants. They are found all over the world and they are generally cultivated because of their abundant flowering and their decorative value.
Appearance of clematis
The appearance varies considerably from one species to another, the flowers are solitary bisexual or grouped in cymes or in panicles. They do not have a petal but have 4 to 10 sepals, whose shapes are variable. It should be noted that the flowering is generous and that it is followed by the growth of feathery, decorative fruits of silver gray color. Clematis is generally used as a climbing plant to garnish a trellis, an arch, a wall or even a pergola.
Planting is recommended in the fall or spring, outside of frost periods. The soil that receives them must be deep and fresh, coming from a mixture of garden soil and potting soil. Ideally, the foot should remain in the shade, for example by covering it with a tile. Another tip commonly used by gardeners is planting other flowers around the clematis to ensure fresh soil.
A severe pruning at the end of winter is necessary to promote flowering and branching, while limiting the volume of the clematis which is a climbing plant. The more we do this, the more flowers we will have. It is also necessary to fold down the stems that flowered the previous year to about 50 cm from the ground. About half of the old stems will be preserved. It is also possible to use fertilizer in the spring as well as at the end of the summer to strengthen its clematis.
It is recommended to water clematis regularly during the first two years. Thereafter, you can be satisfied with a watering during dry periods, according to an interval of ten days.
The climbing clematis is reputed to be a fragile plant. It is particularly prone to apoplexy which results in a sudden drying of the plant. In this case, you must cut the branches of your clematis at the base. On the other hand, aphids can also attack this plant. Note that the use of black soap allows to get rid of it quite easily.
